Publication by Li & Piattini et al.: Monocyte-derived alveolar macrophages autonomously determine severe outcome of respiratory viral infection.

Alveolar macrophages (AM) are lost during influenza A virus (IAV) infection and replenished by a mixed population composed of fetal-derived and monocyte-derived cells. We show functional differences in protection from viral infection depending on AM ontogeny, with monocyte-derived AM associated with a more severe and lethal outcome.
